Foot & Ankle Medical Imaging

Foot and ankle medical imaging helps us see beyond what can be felt or observed during an examination. We use advanced imaging, including X-ray, ultrasound, and MRI, to confirm diagnoses, assess alignment, and guide treatment planning for a wide range of conditions.

These tests play a key role in diagnosing and managing conditions such as:

With these insights, we can tailor your care to what your body truly needs for a strong and steady recovery.

Benefits of Our Foot & Ankle Medical Imaging Service

Medical imaging adds valuable detail to your assessment, helping us understand exactly which structures need attention

Benefits include:

Every scan is assessed with your symptoms in mind, helping us choose the most appropriate next steps for your care.

What You Need to Know About Foot & Ankle Medical Imaging

Who benefits most?

Medical imaging can help anyone with foot or ankle discomfort that doesn’t improve with rest or first-line care. It’s beneficial for:

  • Patients recovering from injury who need a sprained ankle X-ray
  • Athletes seeking clearance before returning to sport
  • People with suspected stress fractures, bunions, or plantar fasciitis
  • Individuals with ongoing Achilles tendon pain or arthritic changes
  • Those requiring comparison imaging

Symptoms and diagnosis

Your podiatrist may recommend imaging if you experience:

  • Persistent pain, swelling, or stiffness
  • Difficulty bearing weight after injury
  • Sharp or radiating heel pain
  • Recurrent ankle rolling or instability
  • Local tenderness along tendons or joints

Your assessment may lead us to recommend an ultrasound, X-ray, or foot MRI for a more accurate diagnosis.

Foot and Ankle Imaging Options

X-ray (including X-ray of the normal ankle)

Imaging allows us to pinpoint the source of foot and ankle pain and plan effective treatment. We use X-rays, ultrasounds, and MRI scans to assess bones, joints, and soft tissues. X-rays show bone structure and alignment, helping us detect stress fractures, bunions, arthritis, and similar issues.

Ultrasound of the foot and Ultrasound of the ankle

Ultrasound is safe, painless, and radiation-free. It uses high-frequency sound waves to visualise tendons, ligaments, and soft tissues in motion. It’s particularly effective for diagnosing possible conditions. Ultrasound can also guide corticosteroid injections with precision. Our podiatrists perform in-clinic diagnostic ultrasound, allowing for same-day assessment.

Foot MRI

An MRI provides detailed images of both soft tissue and bone, revealing subtle injuries that may not appear on X-ray or ultrasound. It’s ideal for identifying cartilage damage, nerve entrapment, or deep stress fractures. While MRIs are not typically bulk-billed, their accuracy makes them invaluable for persistent or complex conditions.

How It Works

Your imaging process is straightforward and designed to give you clear answers as quickly as possible.

  • Consultation: Your podiatrist begins with a thorough clinical assessment and discussion of your symptoms.
  • Diagnosis: If imaging is needed, we determine whether a Foot MRI, Ultrasound of the foot, or a Sprained ankle X-ray will provide the best insight.
  • Imaging: Scans are performed either on-site (for ultrasound) or referred to trusted radiology partners.
  • Interpretation: Results are carefully reviewed and compared to a normal ankle X-ray when relevant to assess alignment or healing.
  • Treatment Plan: Imaging results are combined with your clinical findings to guide your treatment, which may include orthotics, exercise therapy, or guided injections.
  • Follow-Up: In certain conditions, such as stress fractures or tendon injuries, follow-up imaging may be used to monitor recovery.

Why Choose Us?

We combine thorough clinical assessment with access to quality imaging, so nothing important is missed. Our podiatrists are trained to carry out and interpret foot and ankle scans, giving you clear answers without long waits.

Our integrated approach ensures that every image directly contributes to improving your comfort, mobility, and long-term foot health.

Don’t let persistent pain or uncertainty limit your activity. Contact us and take the first step towards an accurate diagnosis and a confident recovery.

Sophie Young and Kirstine Mann have undergone further training to use our in-clinic diagnostic ultrasound. They can use this on patients to diagnose and assess soft tissue pathology. The in-clinic ultrasound also enables corticosteroid injections under ultrasound guidance. Sophie can also administer corticosteroid injections in the clinic, having completed the required 150 practical hours as part of the Endorsement to Schedule Medicine studies.

FAQs

When X-rays or ultrasound don’t explain your symptoms, a Foot MRI can reveal subtle bone or soft-tissue problems such as cartilage injury or early stress fractures. It’s beneficial when pain has lasted several weeks without a clear cause.

A small handheld probe and gel are applied to the skin to create real-time images of tendons, ligaments, and surrounding tissue. The scan is completely painless, and results can often be discussed with your podiatrist immediately afterwards

Ultrasound captures live, moving images of tendons and ligaments in action, while MRI provides a detailed, static view of both soft tissue and bone.

Your podiatrist will choose the best option depending on whether your condition involves movement, tissue injury, or deeper structural changes.

If your ankle is swollen, bruised, or you can’t bear weight after injury, an X-ray can check for fractures or ligament damage that may need specific care. Early imaging helps rule out serious injury and speeds recovery.

Most X-rays and ultrasounds are bulk-billed or attract only a small fee.
Foot MRI scans usually have a private cost unless ordered by a medical specialist, but we’ll always explain any fees before you proceed.
