SWIFT Therapy for Viral Warts

Moon Boot Fitting Highett Podiatry

What is SWIFT?

SWIFT is an advanced, non-invasive treatment used to manage viral warts (verruca pedis) on the feet and other areas of the body. It uses microwave energy to target the wart beneath the skin without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue. SWIFT is highly effective for persistent, painful and long-standing warts that have not responded to traditional treatments.

Unlike topical acids, freezing or cutting, SWIFT works by stimulating the body’s own immune system to recognise and clear the wart-causing virus (Human Papillomavirus – HPV). No dressings, chemicals or recovery time are required.

What to Expect Before Your SWIFT Treatment?

Before commencing SWIFT therapy, your Podiatrist will clinically assess the wart to confirm the diagnosis, size, depth, and number of lesions. SWIFT is commonly recommended when other treatments, such as salicylic acid, freezing, debridement, or topical therapy, have been unsuccessful.

Your Podiatrist will advise if SWIFT is an appropriate treatment option for you.

How Does SWIFT Therapy Work?

SWIFT delivers precisely targeted microwave energy into the wart tissue. This energy generates controlled heat within the lesion, which:

  • Triggers a strong local immune response
  • Helps the body recognise and fight the HPV virus
  • Promotes natural clearance of the wart

Importantly, SWIFT does not burn or abrade the skin surface, ensuring a clean, controlled treatment.

How is SWIFT Used?

During your appointment, the wart will first be debrided (reduced) to remove the hard overlying skin. The SWIFT probe is then applied directly to the wart and delivers short microwave pulses.

  • Each treatment lasts only a few seconds per wart
  • No anaesthetic is required
  • Patients may feel brief heat or discomfort, which settles immediately after the pulse
  • Most patients require 2–4 sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart

You can walk out immediately after treatment with no dressings or restrictions on daily activities.

Are There Any Side Effects?

SWIFT therapy has minimal side effects. Some patients may experience:

  • Mild tenderness
  • Temporary redness
  • Slight throbbing for a short period post-treatment

There is no open wound or blistering, making it suitable for active patients.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

SWIFT is specifically indicated for persistent warts that have not cleared with conventional treatments such as salicylic acid or cryotherapy. Its immune-based mechanism makes it particularly effective in these cases.

Most patients begin to see improvement after two to three sessions. Full clearance can take up to three months, depending on the size and duration of the wart. Longstanding warts may require additional sessions.

Yes. SWIFT is safe for children and is often a preferred option for younger patients as it requires no anaesthetic, produces no open wound, and allows them to return to school and sport immediately after treatment.

Yes. Multiple warts can be treated within a single appointment. Your podiatrist will assess the number and location of lesions at your initial consultation and plan treatment accordingly.

SWIFT works by stimulating the immune system to clear the HPV virus, which reduces the likelihood of recurrence. However, as with all wart treatments, re-infection is possible if you are exposed to HPV again.
